Kevin Nguyen is an author and magazine editor based in Brooklyn, NY.
Writing
His first novel, New Waves, is a story of friendship and grief in the internet age. It was published by One World in 2020 and praised in The New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker, and The Los Angeles Times ("both knowing and cutting, a satire of internet culture that is also a moving portrait of a lost human being"). New Waves was listed as a best book of the year by NPR and the New York Public Library. It was optioned for TV twice.
Mỹ Documents, published by One World in 2025, follows the dissecting lives of four siblings after a series of attacks scares the U.S. government into detaining Vietnamese Americans. It was reviewed by the LA Times (a "gripping novel that lands squarely as a mirror of our contemporary moral squalor") and a NYT editors’ pick ("an ambitious novel of ideas... [that] is too funny and heartfelt for hopelessness"). Esquire, Time, and The New Yorker listed it as one of the best books of 2025.
He is currently writing a biography of Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Nguyen has also published features, essays, and criticism in The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, The Atlantic, The Paris Review, The New Republic, The Awl, Grantland, and elsewhere. His work has been highlighted by Longreads and The Sunday Long Read.
Editing
Currently, Nguyen is the features editor at The Verge where he works on long-form narrative stories about technology, business, and labor. He has also edited several cover stories for New York Magazine. Previously, he was the culture editor at GQ, assigning and editing articles across the print magazine and website.
He's edited stories that have won the Loeb Award, Sidney Award, and Online Journalism Award, as well as finalists for the Pulitzer Prize, James Beard Award, and National Magazine Awards.
